अच्छे अच्छे झुक गये हालात के आगे,
इंसान की क्या बिसात है ग़ालिब।।
तू ना झुका तो तेरी जिन्दगी ,तेरी मर्जी,
करीब न आए दिल के, कैसे हो मुनासिब?

Explanation-

“Even the best of people bow down before circumstances, what standing does a human have? Oh Ghalib, if you did not bow, then it is your life and your choice. If they don’t come close to the heart, how can they ever be appropriate/right?”

अन्जाने  दिल ने वादा किया था जिन्दगी के साथ,

निभाया है हर साँस की लय पर दम-ब-दम ,ग़ालिब।

वो कूचा -ए-ज़ाना ना था नीचे मेरे पा तले तो क्या था,

मुसलसल सदा-ए-अजाँ आती थी सिम्त-ए-म़गरिब ।।

Explanation-

The unknowing heart had made a promise with life, O Ghalib, and I have fulfilled it with every breath, moment by moment.
So what if the beloved’s street was not under my feet?
At every step, the sound of the Azaan (call to prayer) came from the west.
